FIRE in Canada: Financial Independence with TFSA & RRSP

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early — a movement built around aggressive saving, smart investing, and intentional lifestyle design to reach the point where work is optional. Canada's tax-sheltered accounts and government pensions give FIRE seekers structural advantages.

The core FIRE formula: save a high percentage of your income (typically 40-70%), invest it in low-cost index ETFs inside your TFSA and RRSP, and reach a portfolio value of 25 times your annual expenses. At that point, you can safely withdraw 4% per year to cover living costs indefinitely.

Canada offers unique FIRE advantages. The TFSA provides tax-free withdrawals in retirement — no tax on any amount, ever. The RRSP defers tax to lower-income retirement years. CPP and OAS provide a government-funded income floor starting at 60-65, potentially reducing your required portfolio by $300,000-$500,000.

The movement has evolved into several variations. Lean FIRE targets independence on a modest budget ($30,000-$45,000 CAD/year). Fat FIRE aims for a generous lifestyle ($120,000+ CAD/year). Barista FIRE combines a smaller portfolio with part-time work. Coast FIRE means investing enough early that compounding alone funds your retirement.

The most important factor is savings rate. At a 50% savings rate, a Canadian can reach financial independence in approximately 17 years regardless of income level. At 70%, it takes about 8.5 years. The math is the same whether you earn $50,000 in Winnipeg or $150,000 in Toronto — though the cost of living difference makes saving 50% much easier in some provinces.

Canadian FIRE communities thrive on r/fican, Canadian Couch Potato, and MoneySense forums. The combination of TFSA + RRSP + CPP + OAS makes the Canadian path to FIRE among the most structurally favourable in the world.
